I’ve always kind of wished the old television program, What’s my line?, where a panel of celebrities would try to guess what someone did for a living, was still on television. If you ran into me at the grocery store or one of my children’s sports events you’d never guess I’m a sea captain of a pirate ship.
In 1996 My Husband and I along with our son Robbie moved to Wellfleet, Ma. from Captiva Island, Fl. Having grown-up in Kennebunk, Me., I knew I wanted to raise my children in New England.
The Summer of ‘97 I started looking in the classifieds for a job utilizing my captains license when I came across an ad for a “Pirate Ship Captain”. A job working with kids and being on the water!! This was a dream come true. I started the next week. Pirate Adventures had two locations, Hyannis and Orleans, I was hired as Captain for the first season in Orleans. This was the start of my new career, and the arrival of my daughter Charlotte.
In 2000 after five years the owner started talking about closing the Orleans location so that he could focus more on the Hyannis location. Opportunity struck, I offered to buy the business. After much negotiating and convincing, he agreed to sell the Orleans location. I took over as owner and it was all mine!
After an amicable divorce I continued to work to build Pirate Adventures Orleans. My children loved to be involved, they helped add a gift shop to the business. “Who knows better what kids want than kids!!!”
2008 was a great turning point. I married a wonderful man, Brian, who has a beautiful daughter, Erin. Brian is also a boat captain and loves children.
Our lease in Orleans was not renewed for the 2008 season. This is when Brian decided to join me full-time in the business and we moved Pirate Adventures to Provincetown. I’m looking forward to continuing to grow the business with the help of my loving family and an awesome crew.
